The Dominicans in Turkey, by Lorenzo Piretto, OP, from IDI, January 2007 (IDI ? International Dominican Information, www.idi-op.org): ?I would like to dedicate some words to what we consider to be our most important project for the future. The project for a Centre for inter-cultural and inter-religious dialogue was born because we Dominicans asked ourselves about the meaning of our presence in Istanbul. In 1996, the meeting of the Dominican Provincials and friars of the Mediterranean area was held in our convent in Istanbul, in which five Superiors General of Dominican Congregations involved in Islamic milieus participated. The theme studied was «Islam in the Mediterranean: a challenge for the Dominican life». In the conclusions it was said «The Mediterranean has been recognized by all as a unifying factor, notwithstanding the great diversity of situations (north and south of the Mediterranean, Muslim countries and countries with a Christian tradition).?
